Great Movie Soundtracks

Updated on March 5, 2008

A lot of movies are complete because of the music played in them. Sometimes, though, there are movies that live on when the soundtracks are released with them. Just because you like the songs played in movie doesn’t mean that the soundtrack will be great. An example of this Is the movie Empire Records, which is set in a record store. There is some amazing music played in the movie, but the soundtrack falls far short of awesome.

Generally, you won’t go wrong if you buy the soundtrack to a film version of a musical. But you have really hit gold if you can find a soundtrack that stands on its own beyond the film. Below are some movie soundtracks that are awesome. If you have any recommendations, please share them by leaving a comment in the box at the bottom of the page.

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

This 2000 film starring George Clooney was a bit unexpected, with three escaped convicts on the run and searching for treasure. The movie is a real work of comedy, which wouldn’t be complete without the music that goes along with it.

The soundtrack is fabulous, and full of American folk music, featuring artists like Harry McClintock, Norman Blake, and John Hartford. “Big Rock Candy Mountain” is probably one of my favorite songs in the collection.

The Wedding Singer

It would be disappointing for such a great movie not to have a great soundtrack, so luckily both are fabulous. Sure, almost all of the songs are 80’s songs, but they are upbeat and fun. You also get to hear Adam Sandler sing his “Somebody Kill Me” song, which is hilarious.

If you want some good workout music, a pick me up, or an energy boost, this soundtrack is for you. It completely captures the essence of the film – a blast to the past.

The movie is such a great comedy, and the soundtrack is just as entertaining.

Oh somebody kill me please, somebody kill me plee-ase,

I'm on my knees,

pretty pretty please kill me.

Almost Famous

This is a stunning film about music, so it is only natural that the soundtrack would be phenomenal. From Simon & Garfunkel to Elton John to David Bowie…oh man, all of the artists included are awesome. It is full of music that makes you feel good.

If you loved music from the 1970s, then this soundtrack will be the perfect thing for you. I’m still rooting for volume two.

Dazed and Confused

A look at teen angst in the seventies, the movie is entertaining (I’ve seen it about two hundred times). The music fits the movie perfectly, so it is smart that two different volumes of the soundtrack were released. Classic Rock is…well, classic—so, if music that is your deal, you will love these tracks.

Listen to a bit of Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, and Alice Cooper, all in one collection. If it doesn’t send you back to your dazed and confused days, then I don’t know what will.
