Quick Banana Smoothie Tips
Ice Cubes or Frozen Fruit?
A lot of smoothie recipes call for ice cubes. Personally, I'm not a fan of adding ice cubes to my smoothies. They are hard on your blender, and they change the smoothie's texture. Instead, I opt for frozen fruit. I buy fruit already frozen, but I also freeze fresh fruit. I love buying fresh bananas and freezing them - it's cheap and easy.
When I freeze bananas, I peel them and cut them in half. Then they go into freezer bags until I'm ready to use them.
That said, I will include a banana smoothie recipe here that calls for ice cubes just for those of you who love it that way!
Milk?
I usually use soy milk, but smoothies are also good with other kinds of milk. Try cow's milk, rice milk, almond milk, chocolate milk. The choices are countless, and I've used many of them myself.
Sweeteners
I find fruit pretty sweet on its own, so I rarely add sweeteners myself, but I know a lot of people like to sweeten their smoothies. My favorite addition to a banana smoothie is honey, but vanilla extract works well too. Adventurous? Try a bit of maple syrup!
If you use plain milk, it might be beneficial to use a sweetener. I tend to use vanilla soymilk, so when I go for another milk option, the smoothies are as sweet.
Recipes for One
You can easily double and triple these recipes to make bigger smoothie batches.
Basic Banana Smoothie
Ingredients:
- 1.5 frozen bananas
- 8 ounces milk
Directions:
Combine ingredients in blender. Blend everything until smooth. You may choose to add more milk to reach desired consistency. (I like mine thick and have been known to add more banana.)
Peanut Butter & Banana Smoothie
This tasty smoothie gets a protein boost by adding peanut butter. Mmm: Peanut butter and bananas!
Ingredients:
- 1.5 frozen banana
- 8 ounces of milk (you might want to try almond milk)
- 2 tbs. peanut butter

Enjoy!
Chocolate Banana Smoothie
Ingredients:
- 1.5 frozen bananas
- 8 ounces chocolate milk (soy, rice, regular, etc.)
Directions:
Blend everything together until smoothie is smooth! Want to make it extra special? Throw in some peanut butter.
Ice Cube Banana Smoothie
Ingredients:
- 1 fresh banana
- 6 ounces of non-fat milk
- 1 tsp. vanilla or a dab of honey (for sweetness)
- handful of ice cubes
Directions:
Break the banana into chunks and place in blender. Add vanilla/honey and icecubes. Pour milk over ingredients, and blend until smooth. If the conisistency is not thick enough, add a few more ice cubes until it reaches desired consistency.
Strawberry Banana Smoothie
Interested in a hint of strawberry in your banana smoothie?
Ingredients:
- 1 banana (frozen or fresh depending on how thick you want it)
- 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
- 8 ounces milk
Directions:
Combine everything in blender. Blend until smooth. You may need to adjust the amount of milk you use depending on how thick you want your smoothie.
Juice & Banana Smoothie
You can use any flavor juice you want for this smoothie. Some suggestions: Apple, Cran-Raspberry, Blueberry, or Mango
Ingredients:
- 1.5 frozen bananas
- 8 ounces juice
Directions:
Can you handle this? Put it all in your blender and blend! If desired, throw in a couple of spoons of yogurt to make it a little creamier.
Blueberry Banana Smoothie
Adding blueberries makes this smoothie so delicious! It will taste more like a dessert than a healthy fruit beverage.
Ingredients:
- 1 banana (frozen or fresh depending on how thick you want it)
- 1 cup frozen blueberries
- 8 ounces milk
Directions:
Put fruit in blender. Pour milk over fruit. Blend until smooth. This one will make you smack your lips!

Ellie, I usually use soy (choc, plain, or vanilla), and it is so yummy!
Chopsticks, yes to the cinnamon! I haven't done used it in a banana smoothie in a long time, but thank you for reminding me.
Nancy, sorry to hear about your allergy. I have other smoothie hubs so you can check those out. And, with any smoothie recipe, you can sub bananas with yogurt or other fruits.

Great recipes! I love smoothies but of course this is the time of year when I have other flavors than banana. Now strawberries and blueberries are so cheap I want to have those. Bananas are so prolific throughout the year they are better to use when other fruit is not in season.

ohhhh my goodness...the bananna/chocolate soy mix is the best! :) Great recipes!
Nice article! I made "banana milk shakes" and fruit shakes in my Philadelphia coffee shops in the 90's. They were great sellers during the hot, humid summer months.
I visited the Amazon link to check out their offerings. At the site, they also show "used" versions for less, $40 vs. $60 in the ad. Nice to know. I didn't know Amazon sold appliances.
Yumo!!! I want one NOW!!! I just bought a new blender and take protein powder everyday, so I will add it to one of your recipes.... I need to bookmark this so I can try them all!!!!!! My mouth is watering!!!!!
Blueberry banana smoothie sounds great, will try it soon. Very healthy too. Thanks :)
This is one of our favorite treats. An other way to use bananas is to take the slightly over ripe ones and throw them in the freezer, and when you have enough to make chocolate covered frozen bananas.
Thanks, my kids will appreciate this...But I have to say mouth starts watering by about the middle of this hub!
Thanks for the recipes. This is one thing everyone has to try. Very generous of you to share it to us.

Now I'm hungry for a smoothie - we love bananas too and have a few in the freezer. Thanks.
I always like banana smoothies as they seem nutritious as well as delicious ones. Thanks for your great tips!
You gave lots of great sounding recipes here and I especially like the added blueberries! I do like more banana and less ice, and if I use sweetener it is usually stevia. Thanks for sharing the good ideas!
Yummy! Thanks for sharing:)
My son has been asking me to make a banana smoothie. Now, after reading your hub, I have a couple of variety to try out. Thanks.

I love this hub cant wait to make some smoothies for me and my daughter when she gets home.
Hiya.
Like everyone here i love bananas. And bananas in smoothies.
I go for a healthy version which gives me great energy and tastes delicious too.
I put in soya milk, cacao powder, honey, mesquite, cinnamon, coconut oil and sometimes flax seeds. Not the cheapest but it certainly 'does the job'.
Going to try the chocolate banana when I get to work today, hope using a fresh banana is okay, I'll let you know.
haha...I could use a banana hangover shake right about now.
I have a friend who is a diabetic so I found out that agave nectar is a wonderful sweetener. It tastes delish - different than honey - and doesn't spike your blood sugar level as much as honey, maple syrup or other sweeteners.
I am going to try it i hope it works
These are some good ideas. I never even thought to freeze the fruit! It seems so simple now. I've also noticed that coffee, chocolate and banana go good together, although that isn't as healthy as they ones you're offering. I think I'm going to try the chocolate milk and frozen banana recipe.
I can't wait to try your smoothie recipes. I've only recently attempted making my own smoothies-with no success-as opposed to buying them since going dairy free. I'm new to hubpages and am excited to find all these wonderful sites. You can see my story @ hubpages.com/hub/autism-gfcfdiet
Bananas with strawberries, that's a good tasting smoothie!
I love the one with the strawberries. I always use frozen strawberries in my smoothies instead of the ice cubes. I really do not like the ice cubes. I freeze all my fruit for smoothies in bite sizes.
Thanks for the recipe I'm going to try them all. I will not use soy milk as I do not like it so I'll stick to fresh cow's milk.
Peanut butter and banana, that sounds delish!
Sounds good... especially the chocolate-peanut butter-banana, have thrown bananas in the freezer and I will be making smoothies with my daughter as soon as my wife wakes up from night shift. Thanks for the inspiration.
These look delicious.

Because of their great taste, they can also serve as a substitute for sweets and satisfy sugar cravings.

I love smoothies. I probably have one everyday. There are so many variations you can do, just use your imagination and be creative. I recommend almond milk over other milks. It has a subtle nut flavour and less of an after taste that soy milk can sometimes have. Who doesn't like bananas?! :)
Mmmmmmmm strawberry banana smoothie sounds really good right about now. Thanks for posting this, I think I'll make a smoothie this weekend.

Thats Grate. I love Banana smoothies
Thanks for the comment.
yum yum... I'm gonna try one of these with chocolate whey powder... healthy and I hope tasty too
the Trick is using Ripe(browning) bananas . You won't need any sweeteners once the banana has converted from bland starch(yellow) to full sweet sugar (brown peel) .
I use nothing but 5 or more ripe nanas and a little water . Yes , thats it. No Milk. No sweetner,no soy,No powders. Just a good blender . It Is Awesome .
i just made the simple banana recipe , and i doubled the ingredients, and it tastes amazing! i threw in a couple of frozen strawberries, and i had enough for three massive glasses!
